Testing Viral TikTok Recipes: From Fizzy Gummy Bears to “Healthy Coke”

Hey folks!  Barry here, today we are diving into the wacky world of viral TikTok recipes once again. If you’ve ever wondered whether those trending recipes are worth the hype, you’re in the right place, we’ve actually stumbled upon some gold in recent times… plus some ones to forget! I tackled five more of the quirkiest recipes that you guys have sent my way – some were deliciously surprising, while others… let’s just say, TikTok might be having a laugh!

Here’s this video’s line-up:

  • Oil-Free Crisps (Potato Chips)
  • “Healthy Coke”
  • An Onion Boil
  • Pizza Sandwich
  • Frozen Giant Fizzy Gummy Bears

Ready to dive in? Let’s go!

1. Oil-Free Microwave Crisps (Potato Chips)

The idea of making crispy potato chips without a drop of oil sounds like pure magic. All you need is some potatoes, seasoning, and a bit of microwave wizardry. Can TikTok really deliver on this one? Spoiler alert: the results might surprise you!

Steps:

  1. Thinly slice the potatoes with a mandolin or other thin slicing device. Pour them into a bowl of ice water, and let them sit for 20 minutes, swirl them around a little bit, the water should be cloudy in colour, this is to remove the starch. Remove from the bowl and pat dry with kitchen towel fully.
  2. Place on a chopping board, season with salt and pepper both sides and then transfer to a plate lined with baking parchment, in batches place the potato slices on the plate, don’t overlay them.
  3. Microwave for 2 minutes, then remove and flip them over, microwaving for another 2 mins. This is on an 800 watt microwave. So if you have a higher power one, it may be less. Once done they will be lightly browned and crispy, allow to cool and gobble away, repeating with remaining potatoes.

2. “Healthy Coke”

This one had me scratching my head: spring water, balsamic vinegar, and somehow it’s meant to taste like cola?! It’s probably the healthiest drink I’ve ever tried, but the question is—does it actually taste good? Let’s just say it left a lasting impression…

Steps:

  1. Grab a large glass, fill with a good amount of ice. Add balsamic vinegar to the bottom of the glass, top up with sparkling water halfway up and stir, taste it and tweak as necessary, adding more spring water / balsamic vinegar to your preference. This was probably the worst one out of the lot, it tasted more like Dr Pepper if anything, but maybe you will like it!

3. The Infamous Onion Boil

Ever wondered what happens if you boil an onion and eat it like a snack? Yeah, neither had I. But TikTok has its own strange logic, and I was curious enough to give it a go. This recipe is an adventure in itself—if nothing else, it’ll make you laugh.

Steps:

  1. Cut the ends of both sides of the onions so that they can stand flat on a baking tray. Use a spoon to get the middle of the onion out, a knife may help you get going during this step. Try to make the hole go halfway down the onion. Place both onions on a baking tray lined with foil.
  2. Meanwhile in a bowl, mix all the herbs and spices together until well combined, add 1/3 of the mixture to the onions, sprinkling it into the gaps, but also around the edges too. Now pour in the butter into the holes in the onion and drizzle on the sides of the onion to act as a glue.
  3. Sprinkle on the remaining seasoning all over the onions, gather the foil up on the tray and wrap the onions fully in the foil.
  4. Bake for 1 hour in an oven pre-heated to 160fan/180c or equivalent. Remove the onion from the oven and serve a deliciously tender, buttery, spiced flavoured onion, the longer you push the baking time the more soft it’ll be, you could even bake it with the foil off to char it more for a further 10 mins or so for more flavour!

4. Pizza Sandwich

Here’s a recipe that’s part comfort food, part innovation. Imagine stuffing all the best bits of pizza between two slices of bread and grilling it to perfection. It’s like the love child of a toastie and a slice of pizza—and it might just be the best thing since sliced bread.

Steps:

  1. Roll out your dough into a pizza shape on a floured board. Drizzle olive oil inside, then fold over but not perfectly, leave a one inch gap or so so you can re-open the dough once cooked.
  2. Bake in a pizza oven nice and fast like I did or bake in a bre-heated oven at 220c until charred.
  3. Rip open the dough, make sure it is cooked through, if no cook it open faced to make sure. Fill with ingredients of choice, I used rocket salad, mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes, proper delicious! I think this was really good, but really do try to char the bread slightly for a deeper taste, otherwise you are better off just using a naan bread or store bought flat bread and saving a lot of time!

5. Frozen Giant Fizzy Gummy Bears

Last but not least, the pièce de résistance: giant gummy bears with a fizzy twist! This recipe takes everyone’s favorite chewy treat and transforms it into a frozen, sparkly, and somewhat messy masterpiece. If you’re a fan of gummy bears, you’re going to love this one.

Steps:

  1. Place the gummy bears in a plastic tub that can be sealed (bayaya) with a lid, try not to stack them on top of each other. Pour over the sprite to fully coat them, it’s ok to add a little more to be sure, or if making many pour this into other tubs with the bears inside. Leave this overnight in the fridge.
  2. After they’ve been in the tub overnight the bears will double in size. Remove them from the sprite and place in the freezer to firm up for at least 4 hours.
  3. Once set, bite into them for a jumbo ASMR deliciousness treat and remember to share. They taste just as good not frozen once they have absorbed the sprite overnight too.
