Lasagne Bread Bowl

by Barry Lewis

Ingredients

1 onion, chopped

200g mince beef

250 ml tomato passata

1 large loaf of bread, bowl shaped

4 cloves of garlic, crushed

2 tbsp olive oil

Handful of chopped parsley

2 tbsp butter

8 slices of mozzarella

This is a mind blowingly cheese pull tastic recipe – the lasagne bread bowl!!! You must try this….

First step is to slice the top off the bread bowl and hollow out the inside, placing the pieces into a bowl as you will need them later. Into another bowl add the butter, olive oil, and garlic, and microwave for 1 minute. Brush the inside of the bread bowl with ¾ of the melted butter mixture then brush the bread pieces with the leftover mixture. Leave to one side. Heat a frying pan with some oil, then add the mince beef and chopped onion, season with salt and pepper.

Brown the mince and make sure the onions are nice and caramelised, then add in half the tomato passata and the chopped parsley. Give it all a good stir together then leave it to simmer until it has reduced down. Now it is time to start layering up. Take your bread bowl and cover the bottom with 3 cheese slices, followed by half the meat mixture, then finally a few spoonful’s of the tomato passata. Repeat the layering process again, cheese, meat, tomato passata, and finish off with a layer of cheese over the top. Place on a baking sheet, alongside the bread pieces and bake in the oven for 10 minutes.

Remove the toasted bread pieces and leave to one side, then brown the bread bowl off under the grill for another 5-10 minutes. Once brown, and the cheese is bubbling away remove and allow to cool slightly before tucking in. Serve with the crunchy bread pieces alongside to dip in, delicious!
