Candied Bacon Pizza

by Barry Lewis

Ingredients

1 fresh pizza base
good tbsp bbq sauce
12 rashers bacon
2tbsp light brown sugar
2tbsp maple syrup

In this video I show you how to make a deliciously simple Superbowl inspired candied bacon pizza. It has a tangy bbq sauce base and a cheese threaded to make it look just like a football – perfect snack for the big game or anytime of year!

Start off by getting your pizza dough, you could use a ready made base and cut it to size, make your own dough from scratch, or get some dough balls and roll out (that’s what I did!).

Roll on a floured board this pizza into a rough oval shape then use a pizza cutter to shape into a Football (American Football that is).

Bake in the oven for roughly ten minutes until very lightly charred, if you want the base slightly less crispy you can take a min or two off of this. You just want to essentially cook the dough as a minimum.

Leave the baked pizza to one side and make the candied bacon. On a lined baking tray give the strips of bacon a good coating of maple syrup and light brown sugar. Bake for 30 mins until sticky and well cooked through, I charred a few of mine for a naughty taste twist. If you want the bacon to stay flat, place another baking tray on top with baking paper when baking.

With the bacon done carefully remove from the oven, it will be very hot (especially that syrup) so watch your fingers. When ready dice roughly with a sharp knife.

Spread the sauce of choice onto your pizza, I went for bbq as it works so well with the maple syrup. Spoon it all over to cover the base, add the bacon and spread evenly around with a spoon. Then use some strips of cheese to create the thread on the football and return to the oven for a few minutes just to melt it on top.

With the cheese melted your superbowl themed candied bacon pizza is ready to be eaten – enjoy!
