Trying Finnish Snacks – British Taste Test of Salmiakki, Fazer & More!

Ever wondered what happens when a Brit takes on the challenge of trying Finnish snacks? Spoiler: a whole lot of chocolate love, a liquorice rollercoaster, and a surprise new way to freshen the ol’ taste buds!

The Great Finnish Snack Box Arrival!

So, the other day, a lovely Finnish subscriber called Jani sent me a mystery box of snacks, and I couldn’t wait to dive in. Now, I love a good taste test, but I’ll be honest—I had no idea what I was in for. Finland, you really go all in on the liquorice, don’t you?

Of course, before we get into the wild world of Salmiakki (more on that later), there were some absolute gems in this box that I could happily eat every day. The chocolates? Unreal (mostly). The crisps? Crunchy and full of flavour (very strong seasonings!). The liquorice? Let’s just say… it was an experience.

Fazer Chocolate – The Absolute MVP

If you know me, you know I love chocolate. And Finland? You absolutely smashed it here. Fazerina and Vadelmajogurtti were the two that totally stole the show for me.

  • Fazerina – Smooth, creamy chocolate with a hint of orange. Absolute dream. I could demolish a whole box of these and still go back for more.
  • Vadelmajogurtti – Raspberry yoghurt chocolate. Sounds fancy, tastes even fancier. Also, I may have butchered the pronunciation in a way that only enhanced my Bristolian accent. Worth it.

Overall, if you’re thinking about trying Finnish snacks, be prepared for a wild mix of flavors, from the smoothness of Fazer to the intensity of Salmiakki.

The Liquorice Challenge – Finland vs. My Taste Buds

Right, let’s talk about Salmiakki. I knew Finland loved liquorice, but this was another level.

  • Tyrkisk Peber – Okay, what is this madness?! A liquorice shell with an intense salty centre. My taste buds had a full identity crisis. I respect it, but I don’t know if I can survive another one, that explosion of more powder inside was quite a thing.
  • Sisu Horna – These had a cool, strong flavour but weren’t quite as intense as the others, also quite chalky. I feel like they’d be good if you were training for some kind of liquorice endurance event.

I now fully understand why Finnish people can handle Salmiakki like it’s no big deal. You lot are on another level. Hiding it in a chocolate bar too, cheeky.

The Crisps – Taffel Brings the Crunch

You didn’t think I’d skip the crisps, did you? Taffel chips were crunchy, well-seasoned, and totally moreish. Finland, you do snacks properly. Would 100% munch again. The cheese ones, not sooo much, but still a thing!

Final Verdict – Finland, You Surprised Me!

Honestly, this was such a fun taste test. Some things I absolutely loved (Fazer chocolate, you have my heart), some things totally caught me off guard (Tyrkisk Peber, I’m looking at you), but overall, what a box of treats!

Final Thought – What Should I Try Next?

Massive thank you to my Finnish subscriber Jani for sending this box over! What a ride. Now, what other international treats should I try next? Let me know in the comments!
