Sage Pizzaiolo Review: Smart Electric Pizza Oven Tested

by Barry Lewis

I finally got my hands on the Sage Pizzaiolo – a smart electric pizza oven that promises wood-fired results indoors. At £730 it’s a serious investment, so I wanted to find out if it lives up to the hype.

The Test

To give it a proper workout, I made four different pizzas. A thin crust pesto and tomato one, a fluffy Hawaiian with ham and pineapple, a mushroom-packed deep pan, and finally a classic Neapolitan with pepperoni. Each style baked differently thanks to the preset modes.

The standout was the deep pan. The included pan has to be seasoned first, which makes it scorching hot. That gave me an incredible crust, probably one of the best pan pizzas I’ve ever made at home.

What Worked Well

– The preset modes let you switch between thin, fluffy or pan pizza easily.

– It heats up fast and even doubles as a mini oven for roasting veg.

– The deep pan results were superb – golden, crisp, and fluffy inside.

– The included pan and stone are a bonus, as some ovens don’t supply them.

The Downsides

It wasn’t all perfect. The peel felt too shiny and stuck a little, so I’d swap it for a perforated one. There’s also no interior light, which makes it tricky to keep an eye on bakes. And while you can adjust the char level, I didn’t quite get the leopard spotting I’d expect from a wood-fired oven.

Verdict

Compared to the 450c electric pizza oven I tested before, the Pizzaiolo feels more polished and versatile. But it is loud, and the price is steep.

If you’re already a fan of Sage appliances and budget isn’t an issue, this is a fun, clever oven that makes excellent pizza. For most home cooks though, the cost might be a bit much.
