We’ve all seen that photo of somebody having a Birthday cake made out of McChicken nuggets, but did you ever think that it was possible to make cake that looks identical to chicken nuggets?! Well, let me tell you – it is. And it is bloomin’ fun, even make some fries too if you like! For some authenticity why not pop to your local McDonald’s too and grab a chicken nugget box!

First up we make the breadcrumb for the nugget outer layer. Slice up a third of the cake into cubes place them in a mixing bowl with the sugar and cinnamon and mix with a wooden spoon to coat the cake cubes in sugar and cinnamon, place on a baking tray and bake at 110fan/130c  for 55-60 minutes, moving them around half way through, you want to bake them until crispy, remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.

Once cooled whizz up the crispy cake cubes in a food processor with the flour and baking powder. This will be the coating!

For the nuggets thickly slice cake of your choice into chunks, then into rough nugget shapes, get them all lined up on a board and shake of any excess cake crumbs.

Get two bowls, in one put the whizzed up cake cubes and in another beat together the egg and buttermilk.

Now get the oil on in a pan or deep fat fryer, you’ll know it is ready when you drop some cake in and it starts to sizzle almost instantly. Keep it on a steady heat once it is hot enough if using the saucepan approach.

Take one nugget cut out piece, dunk it in the egg buttermilk mixture and shake off any excess, drop it in the crumb mixture and lift any crumbs on with your other hand, so you have a wet and dry hand. The cake piece should look nice and coated and resemble an uncooked nugget! Repeat with all the nuggets and then cook in small batches in the oil until browned, turning out onto kitchen towel and allowing to cool.

For the fries, cut the cake thinly and add it straight to the oil. Once only very lightly browned, remove from the pan and sprinkle over sugar to look like salt!

Serve with the dips and try to surprise your friends!
