Viral Kitchen Hacks Review – From Avocados to Wine Bottles
Yes, we’re back at it again. If you’ve followed this site (or my YouTube channel) for a while, you’ll know that Mrs B and I have tested our fair share of viral kitchen hacks over the years. Some have been surprisingly brilliant, others downright daft, and a few best left on the cutting-room floor.
This round brought another six into the firing line – all new to us, all claiming to make life easier in the kitchen. Spoiler: not all of them lived up to the hype.
The Hacks on Trial
1. Ripening an avocado in boiling water
Yes, really. Dunk the avocado in boiling water and apparently it’ll ripen faster. It sort of worked, though the poor thing felt a bit poached. Oddly enough, I thought it tasted more complex than a naturally ripened one, while Mrs B preferred the classic. Avocado diplomacy continues.
2. Pouring five drinks at once
By chopping the bottom off a 2L bottle, you can supposedly pour five drinks in one go. Technically true, but unless you’ve got surgeon-steady hands, it’s more party mess than party trick. Sometimes the old ways (five cups, steady pour) are best.
3. De-corking wine with a plastic bag
This one nearly finished us off. Shove a bag inside the bottle, inflate it, and pull like your life depends on it. After forty minutes of faffing about and mild panic, the cork finally shifted. Dangerous, impractical – and a waste of a perfectly good evening.
4. Opening a jam jar with your wrist
Apparently squeezing your wrist together and pressing on the lid makes it pop. Weirdly, it did work. But let’s be honest – a decent jar opener or even a spoon under the lid does it better, and with far less chance of looking like you’ve lost a bet.
5. Slicing a watermelon with dental floss
This was equal parts clever and cruel. It worked, but my fingers felt like they’d been through a cheese wire. Probably only worth it if you’ve got a pre-cut quarter of melon and no knife handy. Otherwise? Stick with the knife.
6. Opening a can with a spoon
Finally, a winner! Hook a spoon under the ring pull, flip it, and you’ve got instant leverage. Simple, safe, and genuinely useful – as long as you’ve got a sturdy spoon that won’t bend under pressure.
The Verdict
So, do viral kitchen hacks actually work? As ever, it’s a mixed bag. A few were harmless fun, one was a total waste of forty minutes, and the spoon trick actually earned a permanent place in my kitchen.
We’ve tested loads of viral kitchen hacks before, and this batch proves the internet still hasn’t run out of wild ideas. For more, you can check out our previous kitchen hacks videos. And if you fancy watching this video directly on YouTube, head here.
