It’s another round of Kitchen Hack Testing with Mrs B and me – you’ve sent in a fresh batch of viral tricks for us to put through their paces. Some turned out surprisingly brilliant, while others were absolute duds. Watch the video above (or here on YouTube if you prefer) to see how it all unfolded.
We kicked off with the sun-dried tomato mayo. Honestly, I didn’t expect much, but it actually worked really well – creamy, tangy, and definitely one to keep in the memory bank. On the flip side, the garlic clove hack was supposed to let you whack the bulb and magically free all the cloves. Spoiler alert: it was horrendous.
The weaved toast idea was quirky – the instructions seemed to assume an American pop-up toaster, but under the UK grill it came out golden, crispy and actually rather nice. My own addition to the line-up was a peanut butter dough hook hack. If you’ve ever had to wrestle with oil separating in a jar, this is a game-changer – the dough hook whisked it back together in seconds.
Unfortunately, the broccoli steamer idea was one of the worst. Grating it down just to hover over a pan of boiling water? After twice the time suggested, it was still raw. To prove the point, I even bit into an untouched piece of broccoli on camera – same result. Finally, the instant crème brûlée hack, where you heat a spoon over the hob and press it into sugar on top of a dessert, did actually work. It just needed constant reheating to keep it going.
All in all, the winners this time were the sun-dried tomato mayo and the peanut butter fix. The broccoli steamer? Straight in the bin.
