Kitchen Gadget Testing – A Pepper Grinder with a Torch?!
The video above is the latest instalment of my Kitchen Gadget Testing series, where I raid Amazon for random bits of kit that could either be a total game-changer or… end up gathering dust in the back of your cupboard. As always, some of these are fun, some are genuinely handy, and some might just surprise you. Here’s how they all got on.
Electric Pepper Grinder Mills
I wasn’t expecting much from these, but they actually impressed me. Not only are they USB rechargeable and let you tweak the coarseness, but they also come with a built-in light. So yes, you can season your dinner and find your way through a dark forest at the same time. They look a bit like old-school mobile phones, but they did the job really well.

Olive Oil Spray Bottle
This was a lovely bit of kit. You can use it as both a pourer and a mister, and if you want to get fancy you can infuse herbs inside and keep it in the bottle until you’re ready to drizzle or spritz over salads. A gadget that’s actually useful and might save you buying endless bottles of cooking spray.

‘Safest’ Mandoline Vegetable Slicer
Mandolines usually make me a bit nervous, but this one really does what it says on the tin. A punch-down design that keeps your hands well away from the blades, and it was surprisingly versatile – chips, slices, shapes, all with a single press. If anything, it’s the safest mandoline I’ve tested, which makes it great for anyone who struggles with grip or coordination.

Sistema Microwave Soup Mug
Simple but brilliant. It heats soup evenly in the microwave, thanks to a vented lid, and doubles up as a sealed container if you want to keep leftovers in the fridge. Not the flashiest gadget in the haul, but one of those things that actually earns its space in your kitchen.

Finger Chopsticks
I thought these would be great for noodles, but they’re clearly designed for snackers who want to munch crisps while typing on a keyboard. With noodles they just couldn’t get the grip, so food kept slipping through. For desk snacks though, they actually make sense – you get your crisps without greasy fingers on your laptop.

Electric Flour Sifter
This one really impressed me. A battery-powered sieve that makes light work of flour – perfect if you’ve only got one hand free or struggle with strength in your wrists. You can pulse it or run it continuously, and it just sifts away for you. A gadget that’s genuinely practical, not just a gimmick.
