6 Kitchen Hacks Tested – Some Brilliant, Some Dangerous

by Barry Lewis

If you’ve watched the video above (or here on YouTube if you prefer), you’ll know that this round of kitchen hack testing 2025 had a little bit of everything – creamy hot chocolate toppers, exploding eggs, and even chicken waffles. I tested six viral hacks in total, and the results ranged from genius to downright dangerous.

Frozen Cream Hot Chocolate Toppers – Kitchen Hack Testing 2025 Begins

This one looked so good online – squirty cream piped into cupcake cases, topped with marshmallows and sprinkles, then frozen. The idea is to pop them on your hot chocolate whenever you fancy one. It kind of worked, but the cream deflated overnight. A nice idea, but not quite café-worthy.

Microwave Poached Egg – the Kitchen Hack That Went Wrong

Next up, a poached egg in a pint glass of water microwaved for a minute. Let’s just say this one went spectacularly wrong. The egg exploded, the glass cracked, and our microwave may never recover. A hard “no” from me – and a reminder that not all kitchen hack testing moments end well!

Poached Egg Sieves Hack

Thankfully, this poaching redemption arc worked beautifully. Two mini sieves, a bit of patience, and a spoon handle wedged between them to stop slipping. The result? A perfectly poached egg that looked straight out of a brunch café.

Popcorn Between Sieves – Steam Doesn’t Pop Corn!

Here’s where logic took a holiday. The theory was to trap popcorn kernels between two sieves and steam them over boiling water. Problem is, boiling water only hits 100°C – nowhere near hot enough for popcorn. Twenty minutes later, nothing but sad, soggy kernels. Big fail.

French Toast Ice Cream – Sweet Victory

Now this is where things took a tasty turn. You melt ice cream slightly, dunk in slices of bread, coat in cinnamon, then fry. It’s basically dessert French toast and it’s absolutely gorgeous – crispy outside, custardy inside, and the ice cream caramelises beautifully. Total win.

Chicken & Waffles – The Surprise Success

Finally, we grabbed some cooked chicken drumsticks, dunked them in waffle batter, and pressed them in a waffle maker. It looked questionable going in but came out amazing – crispy, golden, and surprisingly cohesive. Sweet, savoury, and crunchy. Definite keeper.
